Connecting the Digital and Physical Worlds of Art

Our studio looked for ways to connection the digital world and the physical world of art. To do this, our studio includes some engineering. We looked at the parallels between what makes physical art unique and what makes digital art unique. Seeing that NFTs were used with cryptocurrency, we naturally turned to physical money for inspiration. Physical money has characteristics that are both artistic and unique. It is a combination of artistic and engineering effort that creates beautiful works are art that are, in their own way, unique. This helped us create ideas for “bridges” between the physical and digital worlds.

There are so many unexplored layers and ideas that connect the physical and digital worlds. For art, we recognized and explored some of the ideas about how physical money and physical art are connected. Money and art have intersected for centuries, even millennia, with artwork placed on money to make it recognizable and secure. Modern money also has features like serial numbers and embedded technology to help with identifying and securing it.

On the other hand, art that integrates money as a way of identifying and securing the artwork is a new concept. In the digital work, NFTs were a natural part of the process since digital copies are extremely easy to produce. In the physical world, the use of money for securing art is a relatively unexplored concept. We looked at using money as the canvas, using money as a component of the artwork and other concepts related to connecting money and physical art. This process was enlightening as we developed ideas and artistic expression to expand our worldview.
